China-US Scientists Create World's First Graphene Semiconductor “Leap Forward For Quantum Computing"

  • Scientists have made a breakthrough in electronics, creating the world’s first functional semiconductor made from graphene. The discovery is seen as a possible “leap forward” for superfast computing beyond silicon chips.
It comes at a time when silicon, the material using which nearly all modern electronics are made, is reaching its limit. Semiconductors are materials that conduct electricity under specific conditions and are foundational components of electronics. This long-elusive feat was possible due to the efforts of scientists at China’s Tianjin University and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

I recall writing a paper on carbon nanotube logic gates for one of my graduate classes in microelectronics. It was the big topic at the time, where if you don't really know what to write about, you write a paper about carbon nanotubes. It worked "somewhat okay" in the simulation but we didn't even discuss fabrication, and that is my far the biggest challenge, i think graphene monolayer or whatever graphene tech they were doing is probably even harder. The electron mobility is significantly higher in carbon than in silicon, and that's the advantage that we're trying to access, but if i recall correctly, it doesn't work as good as a p-type semiconductor, so I don't think it was possible to use it in CMOS architecture. This course was a while ago so I may be wrong or forgot some details and I'm definitely not up to date on the tech

Requires a SiC template wafer, then requires extremely precise dopant parameters to grow. Care must be done to avoid creating diamond. It is also extremely hard to dice into small chips and requires external insulator for the micro vias. It can hold off extremely high voltage and switch on fast when set up as a mosfet though.
